What are the different styles of yoga?
Hatha-Yoga , is the classic yoga practice and it refers to the 5000 year old practice of yoga postures. In the recent decades, however, because of trademark policy yoga teachers created different names for their own style of yoga. For instance: Iyengar, Bikram, Power, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Ashtanga, are some of the many styles of Hatha-Yoga today. YOGAMATRIX STUDIO calls its classes Hatha-Yoga because our instructors come from diverse yoga background and all our classes incorporate a blend of styles.
Hatha-yoga is essentially based on physical breathing exercises and is the starting point for all forms of Yoga. Metaphorically, Hatha is described as a ladder, by means of which one reaches the heights of all other Yoga forms. Another form, Raja-Yoga, is designed to quiet the mind and expand awareness. Raja-Yoga is composed of eight stages that include the steps of Hatha-yoga and more:
1.) Ethical discipline toward others
2.) Ethical discipline towards yourself
3.) Physical postures (asana)
4.) Breathing techniques (pranayama)
5.) Withdrawal of the senses (relaxation)
6.) Focusing the mind (concentration)
What to expect in a yoga class?
Yoga is an ancient practice that has been handed down through the ages from teacher to student. Yoga classes at YOGAMATRIX STUDIO involve stretching and strengthening exercises (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and relaxation at the end. In a yoga class, differently from other types of exercises, there is no competition and no need to force or strain. Our friendly instructors will remind you to stay at your comfort zone. Yoga is a powerful technique that along with consistency will bring you much more than what you expect.
What is different about Yoga Matrix?
Our Yoga classes offer a combination of precise physical exercise and breathing techniques. In addition, we blend the information of Jnana-Yoga (Yoga of knowledge) and Raja-Yoga (Yoga for the Mind) into the poses. This combination prevents illness and restores health while bringing clarity to the mind, an expanded outlook in life, and a sense of inner peace that is carried throughout your daily life.
Can Yoga help in the recovery of any past injuries I have?
Absolutely. We offer special classes in Yoga therapy to strengthen your back and entire system. Give us a call with your specific concerns or communicate to your teacher any previous conditions before the class. This allows the teacher to adjust the poses according to your needs and help you to restore.
I am not flexible (stiff as a log). Can I do Yoga?
Do not worry. You do not need to be flexible to practice Yoga. Yoga will bring flexibility to you.
I found out I am pregnant. Can I do Yoga?
Yoga is a great way to both prepare your body and support the body of your baby for this happy event. There are some precautions, so let your doctor know about it especially if you are in the first trimester.
Where to start?
If you are new to yoga, it is best to start with beginner level classes and learn the system rather than relying on the fact that you are in good shape and jump right into more advanced classes. It is also recommended not forcing or straining. There is no competition in yoga - what seems impossible today becomes possible with regularity and staying at your comfort zone. Once you master basic alignment and breathing techniques and gain some flexibility, advancing in any of the systems can provide challenges in terms of strength, endurance and balance. If you have any questions, call the studio at 407-354-0909 for advice on classes or teachers that would be appropriate for you.
